This class will be a mix of preschool academics and preschool fun! Think: learning letters, simple math, social skills, and motor skills, in addition to playing games with peers, participating in sensory play, listening to stories, and creating age-appropriate crafts. Students will interact with paint, glitter, play-doh, sand, glue, scissors, and a variety of other materials to get crafty, learn something new, and most importantly, have fun!

Join Study Buddies for a “fall frenzy!” During Session 1, we will investigate leaves, apples, and learn all about the change of seasons. Each week, students will read a short story and will respond to a set of writing prompts. There will be a focus on using close reading strategies, utilizing the text to support written answers, and writing with clarity and appropriate mechanics. The reading passage will vary each week and the teacher will scaffold and differentiate instruction to meet each student’s needs.

Each week, students will read a persuasive piece of writing that addresses a controversial topic of interest for upper elementary and early middle school students (ex. Should students wear uniforms to school? Should students have homework?) Through reading this pro/con article, students will be able to explore elements of persuasive writing. They will discuss within their small group and form their own opinion, and then they will develop their own persuasive writing piece using a “Claim, Evidence, Reasoning” writing technique. The teacher will scaffold and differentiate instruction to meet each student’s needs.

Over the course of four weeks, students will write their own Personal Narrative 5-Paragraph Essay. This is a type of non-fiction writing that tells a story about a real moment in students’ lives. This type of writing pushes students to become more detailed writers, and it is also a lot of fun! The teacher will scaffold and differentiate instruction to meet each student’s needs and examples will be provided. This piece of writing can be typed or handwritten.

Join us for an 8-week College Essay Bootcamp session with local high school teacher, Ms. Erin. Erin earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Providence College and a Master’s in Secondary Teaching from Simmons University. She has a decade of experience tutoring and mentoring students throughout the college process. During her coaching sessions, she provides students with one-on-one guidance and direction when drafting the college essay and the supplemental college essays. Throughout this class, students will also review content, grammar, and style to help create the best personal narrative to present to admissions as a part of the application.
